So I have two lovely (wimpy) indoor senior cats and one monster of a bag of teeth cat named Archie. Archie is two and has been with us a year. We tried to keep him inside, but he is determined and we finally agreed to let him out during the day. The problem is that he tries to bring the outside back in again. So far he has brought in a live possum, rabbit, and chipmunk, all of which had to be freed. But today, as a special treat, my husband came home from the store to find a dead bird in the kitchen. Thanks, asshole cat.

I'm with the in-laws tucked among the hedgerows of rural England. It's not been as relaxing as usual, perhaps due to relentless extended family health issues, but it's still very nice to be here. It's beautiful and the weather is far milder than home. I like ruined castles and Roman towns, and I love farm animals, so I'm easy to please.

Wish the neighbor would give up a cockerel or two, though. One is definitely the right number of cockerels for a farm. But as someone with too many cats, perhaps I shouldn't talk.

My muse has been rubbish this year, but I signed up for LDWS anyway because I'm masochistic.

Beware - It's long and opinionated. I'm not saying my preferences are "right", just that it's what I happen to like.

I'm reading Goblet of Fire to my 7 year old (in the hopes of finishing the series before her friends give away everything).  I question her as I read to see if she's understanding. I read her the part where Ron is furious with Hermione at the Yule Ball and asked my daughter what she thought was going on. She said that Ron was jeaous. I probed more, and she said she thought Ron wanted to go to the ball with Viktor.

I had never considered that. I am so proud of her for not making the heteronormative assumption, and I realized that her assumption actually has more support from the book than what I had assumed and JKR intended. We see Ron obsessing over Viktor, following him around, wanting his autograph, and even having a doll of him. My daughter interpreted that (quite sensibly) as a boy with a crush.

I wonder how many queer youth read it the same way as my daughter and thought that this beloved series was providing them with a gay or bi main character, only to have their hopes dashed. I ship Ron/Hermione, but in that moment I was sad to know that Ron would choose Hermione and rule out any same sex pairings.

All the more reason to take my kids to the new Beauty and the Beast before they come to assume that all male characters will want only women.

Nabbed from [livejournal.com profile] kitty_fic but seems to be doing the rounds.

It is our choices... )

I really enjoyed this. So much fun.  I am such a Hufflepuff: I want my familiar, kind faces and places.

At the Met museum in NYC and saw Voldy in statue form!

I was supposed to be writing fic this afternoon. Instead, I added a Likes/Dislikes to my Masterlist post. I'm proud of myself for carving out some fandom time, but it's never enough to do all of these:

- Read Friends Feed, including fics posted, and then comment.

- Update my Masterlist and upload more fics to AO3.

- Write my Erised fic, finish and edit my Ginny/Pansy fic, make use of the many ideas bouncing around my head.

For those of you attending: How do you choose among all the really cool things happening at the same time? I find just looking at the schedule makes my head spin.

Con veterans: Do you usually plan your choices in advance or do you just follow your whims as the convention goes on? What's worked for you?

Anyone know what happened to [livejournal.com profile] melusinahp? Her journal is suddenly deleted.

So today I finally replied to the comments on my Owl Post fics. Yep. Three months later. *sigh* I haven't done Erised either. And I fear there might be a fest or two from before that I'm forgetting after so many months. *sigh*

I understand why some people just don't reply to comments at all, but I love my comments. It makes writing and posting worth while to feel like someone else enjoyed and related to what I wrote. I want them to know that and to thank them for the time they took to tell me. Of course the time I spent replying and now posting this was the time I'd allotted to write for the next fest, so it feels that one thing is always at the cost of another.
