Harry enjoyed the crunch of snow under his boots. The snow was just the right consistency—heavy but dry—to make a satisfying noise with each step. If Harry kept his thoughts on his feet, his stomach might stop bouncing around his chest, knocking the air out of his lungs with each thought of his destination. Or rather, who was meeting him there.
The lane was beautiful with the sparkle of blue and white lights illuminating the falling snow. Everywhere there were potted firs and hanging wreaths to mark the season, and the snow softened the sounds of the town until Harry could almost believe he was alone in the world.
But he wasn't.
He stopped in front of the stone steps that led down to a cosy French restaurant. Through the frosty windows, he could make out couples sitting at tables, enjoying the intimate atmosphere and romantic weather. The tightness in his chest, the longing to be part of that, was what led his down the stairs and inside.
