Thank you to
susannah_wilde for tagging me!
Rules: In a text post, list ten books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard — they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just the ones that have touched you. Tag ten friends, including me, so I’ll see your list. Make sure you let your friends know you’ve tagged them!
The hardest part of this was that it was just books. I found myself wanting to include short stories like Hills Like White Elephants, Cousin Lewis, and The Yellow Wallpaper that have stayed with me far more than most books I've read. And that's not even touching on the philosophical articles and plays that have rocked my little world. It's a testament to that saying about less being more. I cheated a bit here, as Lizard and Einstein's Dreams are basically collections of short stories, but I did resist the massive cheat of including a Plato anthology.
Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Alanna by Tamora Pierce
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima
The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Lizard by Banana Yoshimoto
Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman
Harry Potter by J K Rowling
Worth noting: I'd read all of these except Harry Potter by 18. It's not that I haven't read great work since then, but when you're young, these ideas are new and startling. They shaped me and they continue to haunt me.
I know I'm supposed to tag, but I am too lazy to cross check who has been tagged and not, and I feel like most of my friends list has been. So if you haven't been tagged yet, consider yourself tagged now.
